Pre-Conference Birding Trip

Birdwatching on the lower Cape

22 August, 1999

Departure: 6:00 AM from Harvard University

Return: by 5:00 PM

For those who want a pre-conference break from geology, conference participants and guests are invited on a one-day birdwatching trip to the scenic lower Cape. Join Cin-Ty Lee (Harvard University), David Lange (Harvard University), and Chris Hepburn (Boston University) on an excursion to South Beach, one of New England's best spots to experience the southward migration of migratory shorebirds and to chance upon an occasional rarity. Expect to see the following birds: terns (Common, Least, Roseate, Arctic (rare)), Piping Plover, Hudsonian Godwit, Red Knot, American Oystercatcher, Semipalmated and White-rumped Sandpipers, Willet, and Ruddy Turnstone. We will also stop by some marshes to look for Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed and Seaside Sparrows. Depart from Harvard University at 6 AM and return in time for the welcoming banquet. Trip to South Island requires a short ferry from Chatham $10/person). Bring binoculars if you own a pair. Space limited to ~15 persons. To sign up or to obtain more details, please contact Cin-Ty Lee at ctlee@fas.harvard.edu (phone 617-496-4356; fax 617-496-0434). First-time birders are welcome.
